Description
Andesite (from the Spanish Andes - the name of the Andes mountain system in South America) is an igneous volcanic rock of intermediate composition, normal alkalinity from the andesite family.
Mineral composition: Plagioclase, phenocrysts of feldspars, hornblende, biotite.
Color: Dark gray or nearly black.
Structure: Incomplete crystalline (porphyry), fine-grained. The groundmass is characterized by a pilotaxite structure formed by subparallel plagioclase laths.
Texture: Dense or porous, often fluid.
Specific gravity: 2.5 t / m3.
Occurrence: Volcanic flows and effusive domes.
Separation: Columnar, in case of underwater effusions - pillow.
Genesis: Effusive analog of quartz diorite. Kainotypic (unchanged) breed. Andesites are characteristic of mature, ensialic island arcs and active continental margins of the Andean type. Metaandesites are found in the post-Archean greenstone belts.
