Description

Travertine (from French travertine, Italian travertino, Latin lapis tiburtinus - Tiburian stone) - calcareous tuff, polycrystalline brittle fine-grained homogeneous rock formed by calcium carbonate minerals (mainly aragonite with a smaller proportion of calcite), limestone deposits. Amenable to grinding and polishing. In the 1st century BC. NS. travertine was known as lapis tiburtinus (stone from Tibur).

Formed as a result of the precipitation of calcium carbonate from the water of carbon dioxide sources. It also stands out from underground waters in caves, forming stalactites and stalagmites. Travertine is formed by the removal of carbon dioxide from solutions containing water-soluble calcium bicarbonate, usually with a pressure drop associated with the release of groundwater to the surface, assimilation by plants, or diffusion into the atmosphere due to intense water movement. The result is a chemical reaction in which calcium carbonate, insoluble in water, is released.

Travertine is used as a building and facing stone (also for interior decoration).
